Building Belonging: Simple Ways to Foster Inclusion in Our Communities
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) – a great time to reflect on how we build truly inclusive communities for people of all abilities. At Caregiver, inclusion isn’t just a value; it’s our daily practice across homes, day programs, and workplaces.
Why inclusion matters – for everyone For individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), inclusion is more than being present – it’s belonging. That means having chances to participate, contribute, and thrive at school, at work, and in community life. The CDC estimates that about 1 in 6 children has a developmental disability. When we remove barriers and welcome every voice, we create communities that are more compassionate, creative, and connected.
3 simple ways to foster inclusion (that you can start this month)
- Make spaces accessible – Small changes create big impact. From wheelchair ramps and clear pathways to sensory-friendly lighting and quiet areas, accessibility makes events and services welcoming for more people.
At Caregiver, we support people to live and work in settings that meet their unique needs – through community living supports, day services, and employment supports. Check our website https://cg-idd.com/our-services/ for more information on community living supports.
- Lead with respect and representation – Representation matters. Invite people with IDD to help plan events, sit on committees, co-present at workshops, and share their stories. Centering lived experience challenges stereotypes and leads to better decisions.
- Create opportunities for connection – Belonging grows through shared experiences. Host inclusive activities where everyone participates side-by-side – adaptive sports days, art workshops, game nights, or neighborhood clean-ups.
For schools: start buddy programs or inclusive clubs. For families: arrange inclusive playdates or study groups; ask what supports make participation easier. For employers: offer job trials, mentorship, or internships with clear accommodations.
How Caregiver builds belonging every day Across our multi-state footprint, Caregiver supports individuals with IDD to live with dignity, independence, and inclusion. With person-centered planning, skilled Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), and strong community partnerships, we help each person pursue what matters most – learning public transportation, advocating for workplace accommodations, or building friendships in day programs.
Take action today! Inclusion starts with one choice – yours. This month, commit to one step that makes your school, workplace, or community more welcoming. Share your progress on social using #BuildingBelonging and tag Caregiver to inspire others.
