Direct Support Professionals: Celebrating the Difference Makers During DSP Recognition Week
Every day, Direct Support Professionals help make something important possible: a life with greater independence, connection, choice and opportunity.
During DSP Recognition Week, September 13–19, 2026, Caregiver is proud to celebrate the incredible people who bring our mission to life in communities across the country.
We call them our Difference Makers — because that’s exactly what they are.
What Does a Direct Support Professional Do?
A Direct Support Professional, often called a DSP, supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) as they live, work and participate in their communities.
But a job description only tells part of the story.
On any given day, a DSP may help someone learn a new skill, prepare a meal or get ready for work. They might also support someone as they participate in a favorite activity, attend an appointment or explore their community.
Along the way, DSPs are often the people cheering the loudest when someone accomplishes a goal that took weeks, months or even years to achieve.
Great DSPs don’t simply provide support. Instead, they help create opportunities.
DSPs Make Independence Possible
Independence doesn’t look the same for everyone.
For example, one person might be working toward preparing a favorite meal on their own. For another, independence could mean getting a job, making new friends, participating in the community or becoming more confident making everyday choices.
DSPs provide encouragement and individualized support to help people work toward the goals that matter to them.
Sometimes progress happens in big milestones. More often, though, it happens through hundreds of small moments that most people never see.
DSPs see those moments — and they celebrate them.
DSPs Build Belonging
Everyone deserves to feel like they are part of their community.
DSPs help individuals pursue interests, develop relationships, discover new experiences and participate in places and activities that are meaningful to them.
Depending on the person, that might mean volunteering, attending a sporting event, trying a new restaurant, joining an activity, going to work or simply spending time with friends.
Those experiences aren’t extras. Rather, they’re an important part of living a full life.
The Heart Behind the Work
The best DSPs bring something to their work that can’t be captured on a checklist:
Patience. Encouragement. Humor. Creativity. Compassion.
Most importantly, they recognize the person before the disability.
DSPs get to know the people they support — their personalities, preferences, strengths, routines, goals and dreams.
Ultimately, those relationships are at the heart of person-centered support.
Celebrating Our Difference Makers
During DSP Recognition Week, we are celebrating DSPs throughout Caregiver and our family of brands for the countless ways they make a difference.
You lead with heart.
Every day, you help make independence possible.
Goals become milestones because of your encouragement and support.
Communities become places of greater connection and belonging.
And through it all, your work changes lives.
To every DSP who shows up each day ready to encourage, listen, teach, celebrate and support: thank you.
Not only during DSP Recognition Week.
Today. This week. And all year long.
