Position Summary
 
The Direct Support Professional is responsible for providing direct care for clients with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities including transportation, menu planning and preparation, etc.;. in a supported living or community-based environment including. This includes the whereabouts of all clients under their supervision at all times as delineated in the ISP and ensuring that required documentation (i.e. client notes, community-based notes, administration records, client financial records, and vehicle logs, etc.) is completed in an accurate, thorough and timely manner.

  •  Providing direct care to consumers served by the agency.
  •  Providing emotional support to consumers and their families.
  •  Following directions of the PC to meet the consumer’s service needs.
  •  Preparing healthy, well balanced meals as well as specific physician-ordered diets
  •  Completing the required number of in-service hours each year to maintain active status.
  • Responsible for preventing client abuse by adhering to all policies and procedures, attending periodic training, reporting suspicious and inappropriate behavior, and following mandatory abuse reporting requirements;
  •  Documenting the services provided as well as turning in paper work within specified time frames.
  •  Following safe practices regarding use of Universal Precautions and proper body mechanics.
  •  Providing homemaker services if specified in the consumer’s Individual Service Plan (ISP).
  • Plan and organize daily activities in accordance with Individual Support Plan;
  • Provides direct client care, including transportation, menu planning and preparation, etc.;
  •  Demonstrating reliability, timeliness, and responsibility while caring for consumers.
  •  Flexibility in scheduling when consumer’s needs unexpectedly change.
  •  Ability to work in challenging environments without physical limitations
  •  Perform other duties as assigned
 
 
 
Qualifications
 
Education and/ or Experience
  •  
  •  High school graduate or GED2
  •  Completion of an accepted Delegated Nursing and MRDD training course
  •  Certified in CPR and First Aid through an approved provider
  •  Demonstrated competence through practical and written tests5. Reliable and compassionate
  •  Neat in appearance
 
Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations
  • Completion of an accepted Ohio medication certification and Department of Ohio Developmental Disabilities (DODDs) eight-hour training course
  • Valid Ohio Driver’s License;
  • Valid Automobile Insurance;
  • CPR and First Aid.
 
Knowledge and Skills
  • Requires extensive mental activities including the ability to: use educated and intuitive judgment, advise, counsel, influence, debate, negotiate, organize, plan and synthesize concepts.
  • Ability to work in a demanding environment.
  • Must be able to make wise decisions under stressful circumstances.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, manuals and other company/documents.  Exhibits above average oral communication skills.  Position required excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to understand the basic concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral communications or instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving unconventional variables in unusual situations.

Duties of this job are performing the following: 
  • Sitting is 50% of work time;
  • Standing, and walking is 30% of work time;
  • Bending, pushing, pulling, stooping, reaching, and kneeling is 30% of work time;
  • Grasping and finger/hand manipulation is 50% of work time;
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds;
  • Ability to operate computer/tablet, facsimile, copier, shredder and calculator.
 
An office setting, varying degrees of background noise, standard office lighting and ventilation, occasional temperature fluctuations are found in the work environment. 
 
Normal business hours with flexibility to work overtime or non-standard hours as required to maintain staffing in the assigned home for continuity of care
